The Center for Lectures and Exhibitions was opened in the capital of Karelia on the 27th of January, 2005. This is a monument of architecture that has been restored; its location is Fedosova street, 19. Previously, in the XIX c., it was a principal hospital of the Olonets province.
This is a one-storey rectangular building, it lacks basement, the size is 26,2 x 12,5 m., made of logs and planked. The planning concept inside is the corridor system. The entrance is a roofed tambour; the arched doorway with a transom and side windows are on the main facade of this tambour. The roof is made of iron.
Prior to restoration works, this building was used for storage and workshops of the Kizhi Museum, but it was not possible to exploit the building any more because constructive components and plumbing system were in emergency condition.
The works on restoration and adoption of the building for new purposes started in 2003 and were finished a year after, the building was put into operation in November, 2004.
Projecting was done by Co ltd “Shtrich” (Director S.F. Likov), contract works were done by public corporation “Vek” (General Director E.M. Voskoboynikov).
The whole complex of restoration works and adoption of the building for exhibition hall were done with high quality. Modern materials and technologies were used to preserve original constructions and exterior of the building.
Financing was provided by the federal budget.
New Center for lectures and exhibitions is the next step in developing exhibition activities of the Kizhi Museum and expanding educational programms in Petrozavodsk.
Center for lectures and exhibitions includes a hall for lectures and exhibitions and two rooms for studios. One of them is the art studio for children “Kizhi palette,” it started in February. New programme on education, culture, and exhibitions “Provincial City” is being developed in the Center for lectures and exhibitions, and this programme aims at the demonstration of links between the capital of the province and farmers’ culture of Karelia. A new cycle of lectures “A Calendar of Holidays in Olonets province” started within this programme in the Center. Traditional crafts are demonstrated in the Center by the museum craftsmen with regard to the Orthodox calendar: weaving, embroidery, lacing with golden thread, beadwork, etc. that
Alongside with the new Center for lectures and exhibitions, a new tour “The Kizhi Island in the center of the capital” was elaborated, and it lies between the Center for Presentations and Exhibitions at Kirov sq., 10 and a new Center located in the historic quarters of Petrozavodsk. The work of smithy is viewed as perspectives.
