Federal State Budget Institution “Kizhi State Open Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography”

The main objective of the training program is to create the complex basic knowledge in the field of the wooden architecture preservation and conservation with the use of the traditional carpentry technology of Zaonezhie craftsmen as well as to increase the craftsmanship of the carpenters-restores.

The training includes both theoretical and practical training under the guidance of our experienced craftsmen based on specially equipped workshops on Kizhi Island.

Our students get familiar with the basic concepts of the traditional northern Russian wooden architecture, as well as with the basic understanding of the possibilities of wood usage as a building material, methods of restoration work and means of the wooden structures durability improvement.

We have developed the modular training program that allows you to combine your training program in accordance with your professional skills, interests and duration of your visit.

The modular training program consists of 6 main units of theoretical and practical classes:

1. Wooden architecture of the Russian North:
   • Architecture as an art form;
   • The main features of the Russian wooden temple architecture and church architecture of Zaonezhie;
   • The wooden architecture monuments of Zaonezhie.
2. Wood as a construction material:
   • The wood structure;
   • Chemical, physical, mechanical and technological properties of wood;
   • Flaws of wood and main destroyers of wooden structures;
   • Durability of wooden structures, methods of wood protection
3. Research study, conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage:
   • Principles of historic wooden buildings conservation;
   • Wooden architecture monuments preventive maintenance;
   • Methods of the wooden architecture dating;
   • Construction and engineering supervision of the restoration works.
4. Main steps of the restoration project development:
   • Required project documentation;
   • Measurement schemes;
   • Identification schemes.
5. Traditional carpentry:
   • Technology of carpentry restoration works;
   • Traditional reassembly of the monument and lifting technology (without the complete disassembly of the structure)
6. Guidelines for the wooden architecture monuments restoration.
